SARATH BABU M · SENIOR PRODUCT MARKETER · BENGALURU
Hi, I'm Sarath Babu.
Engineer → Product Manager → Product Marketer
I've spent 7+ years building and taking B2B technology products to market, with nearly five years in banking and fintech. Today I lead product marketing at OPEN across connected banking, fintech APIs and banking infrastructure.
I've worked across three layers of banking technology — from the systems banks run on to the products businesses use and the infrastructure now being built for banks.
Core
SunTec · 2014–15
Built billing modules for banks, including Standard Bank of Africa, at SunTec, a banking billing and revenue-management company. It was my first look at how much of banking sits below the product a customer sees.
Channel
OPEN · 2020–21
Worked on corporate internet banking for two large Indian banks and took API banking products to market. I also wrote OPEN's API Banking Primer, which became the company's top organic traffic driver.
Infrastructure
OPEN · 2024–now
Lead product marketing for connected banking and OPEN's AI-native banking platform, sold to banks and enterprise finance teams.
The product had outgrown its story. OPEN Money was known as a neobank for small businesses, while connected banking had a stronger enterprise use case. I repositioned it for CFOs and enterprise finance teams. The business now has ₹2Cr ARR from four enterprise anchors.
Merchants were dropping before onboarding really began. OPEN's payment gateway was losing merchants at KYC — the identity and risk checks required during onboarding. I moved those checks later in the journey and digitised document validation. Conversion increased 15%; the gateway grew to 200+ merchants and ₹420Cr in peak monthly GMV.
A free product needed to start charging. Optotax, a tax platform for chartered accountants, had been free for five years. I co-owned the packaging and migration with product. 95% of active users converted, churn stayed below 5%, ₹30L ARR was added, and around 30% of accounts later moved from monthly to annual plans.
We didn't know the ICP. OPEN's accounts-payable automation product launched without a clear ideal customer. I used ads to test industries, narrowed the focus to manufacturing, automotive and food & beverage, and built a separate GTM for each. That produced 10 enterprise clients and ₹6Cr in pipeline.
I'm rebuilding parts of marketing and sales around AI and automation — from how we research and create content to how leads are sourced, enriched, routed and fed back into the sales process.
OPEN Money was known as a neobank for small businesses. Its connected-banking capability — seeing and moving money across a company's bank accounts from one place — had a stronger enterprise use case, but the product story did not make that clear.
Decision
Start with segments where handling multiple bank accounts was part of day-to-day operations. AMCs manage accounts across schemes, real-estate companies across projects, and HRMS platforms serve clients with their own corporate accounts. These segments gave us both a large enough pool of accounts to target and customers with the ability to pay for simplifying the work.
Action
I led the repositioning of OPEN Money for enterprise finance teams with my marketing team and launched the new site. We sold connected banking as a dashboard to AMCs and NBFCs, and as APIs to ERP and HRMS platforms through Zwitch, OPEN's developer platform. I then shifted the channel towards ERP implementation partners and rebuilt pricing around a minimum of ₹1L per client per month.
Results
₹2Cr ARR · 4 enterprise anchors — a top mutual fund house, a leading HR-tech platform, a listed real-estate developer and a large NBFC · 4 implementation partners signed
What I learned
The route to market changed the economics. An ERP platform partnership could top out at roughly ₹3–5L a month. An implementation partner could bring multiple clients, with each client committing at least ₹1L a month.
How I got there
I also built battlecards against Trovata and TransBnk. Sales used them in a contested ERP integration deal that OPEN won on bank-connectivity breadth.
Case 2 — Zwitch Payment Gateway
Moving KYC later in onboarding: +15% conversion and 200+ merchants
Onboarding · Conversion · Sales Enablement
Challenge
Merchants were abandoning signup at KYC and risk checks, which sat at the start of onboarding.
Decision
Remove avoidable friction before asking merchants to complete the heavier compliance steps.
Action
I moved KYC and risk checks later in the journey and digitised document submission and validation. I also led the marketing work around the gateway, including the sales material used to take it to market.
As the gateway scaled, the limits of the category became clearer. Razorpay and Cashfree had already built significant scale, differentiation was getting harder, and fraudulent merchants added another layer of risk. OPEN later chose to focus its effort elsewhere.
What I learned
Fixing a conversion problem can improve a product without changing whether the category itself is worth pursuing.
Case 3 — Optotax
Five years free to 95% paid, in six weeks
Pricing & Packaging · Migration · Lifecycle
Challenge
Optotax, a tax platform for chartered accountants, had been free for five years. It needed to start charging without losing the users who depended on it.
Decision
We could not keep maintaining the full product for free. Reports were one of the parts CAs relied on most, so continued access to reporting became part of the paid plan.
Action
I worked with product on the free-versus-paid packaging and led the migration with my marketing team. The main objection was simple: why pay for something that had always been free? We explained why the product could not continue in the same form without a paid plan, gave users a route to speak to the team, trained sales on the product and brought subject-matter experts into customer conversations.
Results
95% of active users moved to paid · <5% churn · ₹30L ARR added · ~30% of accounts later moved from monthly to annual plans
What I learned
The difficult part was not announcing a price. It was making the value of continued access clear enough for long-time free users to pay for it.
Case 4 — OPEN Accounts Payable
We didn't know the ICP, so I used ads to find it
Segmentation · Experimentation · Vertical GTM
Challenge
OPEN's accounts-payable automation product — software that helps companies manage and pay suppliers — launched without a clear ICP. The team had hypotheses, but little evidence.
Decision
Use ads as a segmentation test: put the same product in front of different industries, then compare who engaged and who moved further down the funnel.
Action
I led the experiments with my marketing team, compared engagement and conversion across industries, and narrowed the focus to manufacturing, automotive and food & beverage. We then built separate messaging, decks and sales plays for those verticals.
Results
10 enterprise clients · ₹6Cr pipeline · +20% demo → solutioning · +15% demo → conversion after sales training · Several clients also asked for connected banking
What I learned
Ad engagement told us where to look, but it could not tell us who would buy. The confirming signal was movement deeper into the funnel: once we narrowed to the three verticals, demo-to-solutioning conversion rose 20%, which is what validated the ICP rather than the ad data on its own. Doubling down on those segments — with vertical messaging, decks and sales training — then lifted demo-to-conversion by a further 15%.
Current build — AI and automation at OPEN
Rebuilding our GTM stack at a fraction of the cost
AI · Automation · RevOps
Challenge
OPEN's sales and marketing setup used HubSpot and ZoomInfo at a combined cost of roughly ₹72L a year. Sales was still spending time sourcing, enriching and moving lead information between systems.
Decision
Replace the expensive stack with a simpler setup built around the work the team actually needs to do.
Sales
I am leading the rebuild with my marketing team. We moved CRM workflows to Attio, use Apollo to source leads against written lead hypotheses, and enrich contacts only when sales needs them. Make, Zapier and Google Apps Script connect the workflow. ERP partners submit client details through one form that tags the partner and sends the record straight to Attio. Sales call notes feed back into the lead criteria.
Marketing
I built a content system in Claude Code that handles research, drafting, fact-checking and evaluation using Grok and Gemini. The marketing team adopted it.
An expense tracker that reads transaction SMS messages and turns them into a spending view without manual entry.
React · Supabase · Capacitor
Multi-agent content system
Research, drafting, fact-checking and evaluation in one pipeline. Used by OPEN's marketing team; blog production time fell from 4–5 hours to 1–1.5 hours.

Writing
I write about banking infrastructure and fintech.
API Banking Primer
A long-form guide to API banking that I originally wrote for OPEN. It became one of the company's strongest organic traffic drivers. The current version is published under a team member's byline.
Strengthened how I connect product vision to strategy, prioritisation and the metrics used to judge whether the product is moving in the right direction.
Covered the fundamentals of product discovery, prioritisation, requirements, roadmap decisions and working across product, engineering and business teams.
An intensive product management program covering product discovery, strategy, prioritisation, metrics and execution, with mentoring from experienced product leaders.
Nearly five years in banking. Almost all of my career in B2B.
I started as a software engineer at SunTec, building billing modules for banks including Standard Bank of Africa. I later joined OPEN as its third marketing hire at Series A, where I worked on corporate internet banking, API banking and Zwitch, and wrote the API Banking Primer that became OPEN's top organic traffic driver.
Between my two stints at OPEN, I worked across B2B marketing and product. At Regalix, my pre-sales work helped close $700K in deals with Wipro and EdgeVerve. At Tan90, as the founding product manager, I helped scale a STEM product to 228 schools across 15+ states. In London, at NISA, I sold a 15M-follower Instagram page to tech brands including Hinge and InVideo.
I'm now back at OPEN as a Senior Product Marketing Manager, working across connected banking, fintech APIs and banking infrastructure.
I'm most useful when the product is technically complex, the buyer is hard to reach, and the GTM needs more than a new campaign.
